Peach + Gray :: Color Inspiration

As the winter weather comes along, spring and summer brides and getting ready to choose colors and get started with all their planning. One of my favorite color combos is peach and gray. It is subtle and elegant to go with any sunny day! There are different shades of both colors, so you can really play around with color combinations. Gray is an easy to work with natural for both guys suits and girls dresses. Peach is a soft accent to any flower arrangement and tablescape or bridesmaid dress. This color combo can go great with a turquoise or dark purple to add some more color to the pallet. Enjoy!

Manspired Drinks

Some men may think that women are the ones that make all the decisions, but there is at least one area the man can make an important decision... the BAR. Here are some great man-inspired drinks that will make for an amazing groom or male cocktail at the bar.  These are  a mix of some hard liquor and beer drinks, so grab a glass and make a manspired drink {women you can enjoy these too}.


Sidecar

Juice of ¼ Lemon
1 oz. Triple Sec (Curacao, Grand Marnier or Cointreau are also acceptable)
1 oz. Brandy or Cognac

How to make it: Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass


Old-Fashioned

2 oz. Blended Whisky
2 dashes Bitters
1 tsp. Sugar
Splash of Soda
1 strip Orange Peel
1 strip Lemon Peel

How to make it: Muddle the sugar and bitters together in an old-fashioned cocktail glass. Add some ice, soda, and whisky. Stir and garnish with the orange and lemon peels


A Hole In One

1 1/2 oz Johnnie Walker Red Label
1 tbsp honey
3 oz unsweetened tea
1 lemon wedge

How to prepare it: Add the Johnnie Walker Red Label, honey and unsweetened tea in a glass; stir it and serve over ice. Garnish the drink with a lemon wedge


Black Velvet

3/4 pint Guinness
1/4 pint champagne

How to prepare it: Pour Guinness in a tall glass and top it off with champagne

Black and Tan

1/2 pint Smithwick's Ale
1/2 pint Guinness Draught

How to prepare it: Add the Smithwick's Ale to a pint glass, and then add the Guinness by pouring it over the back of a spoon





Manhattan (Dry version)

¾ oz. Dry Vermouth
1½ oz. Blended Whisky

How to make it: Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Serve with an olive








Caipirinha

1 lime 2 ounces of cachaça sugar to taste ice cubes Wash the lime and roll it on the board to loosen the juices. Cut the lime into pieces and place them in a glass. Sprinkle with the sugar and crush the pieces (pulp side up) with a pestle. (We have a long, wooden one from Brazil, made specifically for this purpose.) Just enough to release the juice, otherwise it'll get bitter. Add the cachaça and stir to mix. Add the ice and stir again

Summer Drinks

Now that the pools open this weekend and the sun is shining all I can think about are some of the great drinks I will have this summer. There are great ideas to make at home for a BBQ or have as a specialty cocktail at your event or wedding. Come up with some cute names and put it in a nice glass and you have some wonderful cocktails! Ask your caterer about serving these specialty drinks at your event and make sure they have the recipe you want to use!

{Wine Smoothies}

Wine smoothie consists of a fruity wine, like rose, blended with ice and fruits of your choice. Garnished with a couple of berries or fruit slices

{Mojito}

Mint leaves, crushed ice, Dark Rum, Sugar and Lime Juice, all muddled together and topped with some soda water. Top it off with a piece sugar cane! Add some muddled fruit and you can make many varieties of mojiots!

{Margarita}

Salt the rim of a glass, then mix tequila, orange-flavored liquor and lemon juice. Squeeze a fresh lime and you got yourself Summer in a Glass! You can also blend the mixture together and have a Frozen Margarita!

{Sangria}

You can make both Red and White Sangria using either a red or white wine. For both add in wine, some sugar, typically orange and lime juice and other fruit cut up/sliced and stuck in the mixture. Afterwards eat the fruit and delicious!

{Fruit + Gin}

Gin Bucket is a yummy summer tradition from my college years, but it makes for a refreshing and light summer drink, perfect for BBQ's and concerts since you make a ton at a time! 

Gin, Limeade concentrate and Orange Concentrate let thaw in the gin, Any lemon-Lime soda and lots of cut up fruit. Just like the Sangria, after the fruit has sat in the mixture for a while it is so good to eat!

An Oldie But Goodie :: Vintage Love

Vintage has always been in, from vintage cars, clothes, music and art. Everyone loves something old that can be used in a new way! Weddings and events are a great way to bring in some vintage items to add dimension and uniqueness. Use items you find in your garage, at yard sales or thrift stores. Use some vintage bikes or cars in your pictures or wear some vintage jewelry. There are so many ways to use vintage items, the sky is the limit! You can have a full our vintage themed wedding or just use items that work with your color scheme or another theme! I am in love with using vintage items for engagement and wedding photos as well, you do not have to add them to your event just the pictures.

Cookies are a hot item right now and having cookies in specific shapes that represent your event or wedding makes a great guest gift! Cookies have always been a favorite, from chocolate chip to the peanut butter. What a great way to give your guests that sweet treat they are craving and have them remember what your wedding or event meant to them after that day. There are so many great bakeries all over that can help you bring your vision to life. You can also make some of these cookies your self and save some money {maybe not time} for your event! These cookies make great additions to any company picnic, child's birthday party or any themed event.

Oh How I LOVE Ikea!

As gas prices are rising and it seems like everything is costing more... it only makes sense that brides and corporate planners will try and use cheaper items to make their event magical. I am and will always be a fan of Ikea. I know some people may not agree, but they have some great items for decorating a space or venue for your special day or event. These items are normally super cheap can can sometimes be ordered so that you can get as many as you need. A lot of other home decor stores are really expensive or don't carry a ton of one item. Here are some of my favorite items to use during an event to same some money!


Great vases, wire baskets, lanterns, trays and more! There are so many things that Ikea has that are useful at weddings and events! They are cheap and are easily transitioned to be used in the home!

Mason Jars :: Southern Rustic Charm

Now that summer is right around the corner and it is inevitable I will be spending more time outside, I keep thinking about mason jars. Drinking out of them, playing games with them, putting candles in them; there are so many uses for the mason jar at either a rustic spring or summer wedding. Enjoy some of the great picks and even if you are not using them at a wedding or event make a mojito, put it in a mason jar and sit outside and relax!

Picture Perfect: Easy, Cheap Guest Book(s)

After meeting with a cute couple for a wedding walk through, at a old urban candy factory with great exposed walls and ceilings, it got me thinking. The couple was tech savvy, yet old school and I love the combo. They wanted a cute, not cheesy way to do a guest book. I had seen photo booths before, but i love the idea of using a Polaroid camera and having guests take pictures of each other  or have one person in charge of the photos with fun props and writing their love to the couple on the back. Then finding a photo album and putting all the Polaroids in the photo album so you can see the front and back. This idea is so cute and seems so easy. The only hard part may be finding the Polaroid camera, but that can be handled easily enough.

If you want more than that, I thought that getting a older video camera and having it planted in an area on a tripod with a good background. Then just have all your guests record their congratulations to the couple, and anything else they may have. Just make sure you have enough recordable videos! You can now easily have videos transfered to DVD and have a great guest book you can keep forever!

If you want something a little easier to set up, you can always rent a photo booth and have your guests take photos and put it into a cute book. Then they can write on the pages of the book next to their crazy photos! Most photo booths rented come with great props like crazy hats, wigs and glasses.

Hope all your pictures are perfect! No matter if you do something crazy or traditional, make sure it is something you can keep and remember!

Lemons and Limes and Everything Nice

With spring so close I cannot stop thinking about all the bright and amazing colors that spring brings. I love  the great fruits and vegetables that come with spring as well. fruit is a great way to bring in great color to a wedding or event. Use fruit as a accent to your centerpieces and flowers or as the main attraction. You are not just stuck with yellow and greens, you can add in reds, pinks, oranges and blues! One For The History Books

As the new year begins and I start thinking about my past year and the year to come, I cannot stop thinking about how far America has come since its inception. In the events world so many people use historical places for receptions and parties. Being in Washington DC there are so many historical places with great stories and beautiful views. I want to share some of my favorite historical places for events in DC... please let me know some of your favorite historical places from your town!

George Washington's Mount Vernon: I used to love to go to Mount Vernon as a child and see the amazing rooms and run through the green grass. Located 16 miles from Washington DC, Mount Vernon is a popular location all year. The east lawn can be rented for events, as well as the educational center. I love the amazing view of the Potomac River from the lawn and the great history of the location. You can also have private tours for events or outings. Unfortunately, you can not have an event for political, fund-raising or personal (weddings), but you can for an organizational  get together. Thomas Birkby House: I have been to a couple of events at this location and I absolutely love it. This quaint house in Leesburg, VA has an amazing outdoor patio for all sorts of events. "The Carriage House, built in 1814, is a two-story brick building. It is where Thomas Birkby and his family, perhaps one of the last coach makers on the East Coast, practiced their trade until 1903. The Birkby's manufactured carriages, coaches and buggies on the second floor and kept their horses on the ground level." What great history that is quite uncommon in the DC area. Raspberry Plains: Although farther out in Leesburg, VA Raspberry Plains has a great location with a great view, great gardens and a great reception site. I am in love with their Grand conservatory and their gardens. The house was built in the colonial era and has stood the test of time. The location has picturesque views of rolling hills and brings the outdoors in. Definitely one of my favorite places just for the view. Love Me Some Birch

 I am in love with the birch look this winter season! I love it for any season really since it is versatile and looks great with some many natural colors. I found a great DIY to make birch center pieces! I found some great birch vases made with a glass vase and a birch sleeve bought at a flower market, then take anything you have around the house or can find at the craft store to decorate the vases, like jewels and earrings and fabric flowers.

I love the green and natural look of birch and the simplicity of it! You can also buy birch branches at the flower market or a local craft store and use them alone or in a flower arrangement. You can also paint the birch piece or use sticks you find from around your yard and paint them. If you want a green wedding this is a great way to go since it is inexpensive and natural.

Birch can go a long way and can be used in many different ways. Use it in the winter or in the spring! Birch is also great to use within the house as well, make your own birch candle holders or throughout your home!

Chocolate Spoon Please

Recently I was searching around blogland and found this great post about chocolate spoons from Table 6 Productions. It was a post from Solutions Bridal and she had these great sweet chocolate spoons. I feel in love and started thinking about some other creative and innovative desserts that are both delicious and cheap. Here are the steps to make the chocolate spoons … “First, find some plastic spoons. Why not get spoons that coordinate with your wedding colors? Then simply melt your favorite chocolate over boiling water on the stove, and pour! While it’s cooling, decorate with edible beads, small candies, sprinkles and whatever else makes your mouth water. If you want to add chocolate candies, wait a few minutes until the chocolate in the spoon is cool.” Easy right!

I also love making homemade chocolate lollipops! These are just as easy as the spoons and you can find the sticks at any craft store. They also normally have molds fro you to use as well. Just melt the chocolate and put them into the lollipop mold. You can add candies in if you want. You can wrap them and give them as wedding favors or put them on your dessert table for guests to eat right away!

Any sort of cookie that can be baked at home makes a great addition to your dessert table. They normally are better than those bought since they were made with love and soul. Donut is the New Cupcake

Recently I saw a post about having donuts at your wedding for dessert. I absolutely love this idea since it is cheaper and more fun than the trend of cupcakes. Don’t get me wrong I love cupcakes and could eat them everyday if given the chance, but donuts are way more fun! You can either talk to your caterer about having the company make he donuts or just pay a ton the morning of your event from Krispy Kreme or another donut store. You can have different toppings for your donuts laid out, such as different sauces and some candies and nuts. Guests can have a customizable desert and have fun eating it as well. You can make donuts as classy or as down to earth as you want… making them a great versatile food item! If at all possible to get warm donuts that would be best! You can also get a variety of donuts with toppings on it already for guests to just choose from! If you caterer can make donuts have small appetizer size donuts with a variety of toppings and flavors for guests to choose from! I also started thinking about having donuts as the dessert at your rehearsal dinner if you want to have a traditional cake on the day of your wedding. You will save money and all your guests will enjoy the treat.

This idea is great if you are having an office meeting or a corporate event. How great to have warm donuts and different toppings before a long office meeting, not just a plain box of donuts. Or if you are having a small reception during the day, have donuts. Everyone loves something sweet during the day, and your guests will be surprised by something new and different.

Donuts don’t have to just be sitting in a box! You can get great plates or serving trays to have your donuts on! Or take the donut box to new heights by using a box in your event or wedding colors to display the donuts. Be creative with it and have fun as well. There are also some great companies in areas that make outlandish donuts with crazy toppings! These might be a little expensive to order, but look at their sites to get topping ideas!

An Artsy Wedding

I recently had the honor to work a wedding at the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, DC. The Corcoran is a gallery and an art school featuring both classical and modern art. The gallery itself was fantastic, but the wedding was amazing, with many touches that brought the art theme throughout the wedding. An art gallery is an amazing place to hold a wedding and reception since they normally have great architecture and layout, plus have great visuals for all the guests. The Corcoran has then great burnt orange/red walls, which the couple utilized when thinking of their colors, flowers and lighting. With great red and orange flowers, sliver linens and gold lighting, the place looked amazing. Sometimes adding lighting can change the coloring of a venue and allow you to use the colors you really want. Think about adding some under lighting to the event to create a new angle on a venue. The couple also had great escort card and table numbers. To continue the art theme, each table was labeled by an artist with a picture the artist had done. The escort cards were postcards, in a multitude of paintings, all done by one of the artists on a table. The guests then had to match their artist postcard to the artist table. How creative and different, I really loved this idea! The ceremony was my favorite part of the event since it was done on the grand staircase of the Corcoran gallery framed by statues. It brought great attention to the couple and made for a truly unique ceremony.

If you are thinking about doing your wedding or event in an art gallery, make sure you talk to the venue first. Some places do not allow guests to walk around, and if that was your whole plan, then you may need to look else ware. Make sure that your wedding colors and the colors within the building do not clash and will work well together. Some gallery’s may have multiple rooms or great outdoor areas so you can tailor your event or wedding. There are so many different kinds of art galleries that you can be really creative and let your inter artist shine!

There are so many creative things that you can do at an art gallery or at other places:

• Serve drinks named after artists or paintings
• As a guest book have people paint on canvases to say congrats. It will be interesting to see what people come up with.
• Have a treasure hunt using clues about the gallery/paintings and have people be able to go through during cocktail hour
• Instead of doing the event their have pictures at a gallery

Also depending on the type of art gallery you are working with it is important to ask some questions:

• How many guests can be accommodated?
• Are tables and chairs supplied?
• What caterers can be used, if any?
• Can guests tour the gallery?
• What kind of music can be at the wedding/event?
• Can alcohol be served?
• Are there limitations on decorating the venue?
• How much is a rental and for how many hours… some galleries can be expensive.

Trick or Treat Smell My Feet

Halloween is a day to get dressed up and be someone else! From kids to adults, Halloween is always a fun time and allows you to decorate using scary and wild things. Here is an inspiration board for Halloween parties! I love how excited kids get about being able to walk around and show off their costumes and get candy! But seriously, who does not love candy? Weather you are throwing a party for your neighborhood, your work or a wedding, here are some great ideas! I love using the colors orange (obviously), black, purple and green. There is a way to make this Halloween colors less harsh, yet still get the same vibe! This holiday, especially if having a wedding or large event, allows you to be really creative and use things that are not traditional. Think about bring in some Halloween traditions such as carving pumpkins, trick or treating, spiders/spider webs, ghosts and black cats. You can even make the event more “fall” themed than Halloween themed. Bring in natural fall colors, as well as some Halloween colors and mix the two themes. I love the use of pumpkins, apples, treat bags and leaves. I hope you can incorporate some ideas into either your wedding or event! Happy Halloween!

DIY Wedding Favors

Happy Friday to everyone... and happy 3 day weekend to everyone that has it!
Recently I have been finding great blogs with DIY things such as shirts, furniture, and a million other things. I love being able to do something myself and see the result afterwards. This made me start thinking of a great DIY wedding favor. I have a couple ideas so I hope you all find something you like as well. These ideas are helpful if you are on a budget or just want to be able to say you made something yourself.

1. Homemade cookies/sweets: If you are any sort of a baker at all or have a fiance or mother that is, this is a great idea. Don't make break apart cookies, but make them from scratch (easier than you think)! Think 2 or 3 cookies per guest and figure out how many cookies you will need. Also figure in some for the bakers and others. This should be done only 2 days before the wedding since you do not want the cookies going stale. But if you make up all the dough and give it to bridesmaids and others to bake to make the time go faster. Go to the craft store and find cellophane bags or use cute paper bags to put the cookies in. Stuff the bags and close them off. You can go a little more above and beyond and get stickers that represent your wedding or have your names on them for the bags. You can find other cute ways to give your cookies such as a cute box or a cute small cookie jar! Although this may be time consuming what a great wedding favor that your guests will truly appreciate! They will know you took the time and energy to make something for them!

2. Already mentioned in another post is a candy bar. This is something so simple and easy that guests really love and a great DIY gift. It is easy to find candy that you all love and will go good to be scooped and put into a bag. Then you can make cute signs with the candy name and directions all from home just get nice paper and use some ribbon.

3. For a fall wedding cute cute smaller pumpkins that can double as escort cards for each quest to take home

4. Another very popular favor has been seed packets or flowers/herbs. Go to your local Lowe's or home depot and look at their potted plants. You can buy a ton on small flowers already in soil at the store. Then get small Terra Cotta pots and put ribbon around them or paint them. Put the flowers in the pots and what a great gift... this can also double as an escort card. You can also skip the pots and get burlap to wrap around the soil part. This works better with a little bit larger plant or a tree buddling to give as a gift. Add a cute poem and how the guest should plant the plant to represent the start of your life together and watch it grow. 5. Another great thing to do is go to Esty.com and look through what people have posted! You may be able to find a great little gift at a cheaper price not made by you! This will save you time and the site is so amazingly cute! You might just find a ton of things on there for your wedding!

6. Great for a fall or winter wedding but can be turned into anything you want. Create a mixture of spices use for making hard apple cider. Mix the spice packet and but into a bag that can be steeped in the liquid. Attach directions on how to make it and you are set! This can also double as an escort card by adding a name tag!

Color of the Week: Black and White

What an amazing fall day outside today in the D.C. area! I have been thinking awhile about some amazing colors, but I love the classic black and white. I especially love black and white photos they make my smile for no apparent reason. I love the simplicity of the two colors together and the classic romance that the colors represent. These colors are great for primary and secondary event/wedding colors. If you are looking for something that makes a statement, but is not TOO over the top Black and White are the answers. I love combining black and white as the primary colors with a bright secondary color to accent. Silver looks great as an accent in on the table and chairs.
Regardless of what your wedding or event colors are... you will somehow bring in great accents of black and white. If you don't want to make black and white main colors add some black and white photos into the reception space or have great black and white programs or menu cards and add a pop of your wedding color. You can also have your bridesmaid dresses black with a sash of color! Combine some great black and white into your bouquet with some colored flowers!

Fall into Fall Weddings

I was thinking about the changing on the seasons and how beautiful fall is with all the leaves changing and Halloween. Gone Missing {Creative Table Numbers}

So even if people know what table they are supposed to be at, that does not mean they can find the table. Table numbers are a great way to add some individuality and creativity into your wedding in an inexpensive way. Sure you can go with the basic paper number and metal holder, which is not bad, but why not incorporate your theme or something you and your fiance love into the numbering. This goes for events as well, make the table numbers stand out and a conversation piece, not something bland and boring.
Choosing what you want to do for your table numbers can be a little daunting, but take it slowly and start thinking of any and every idea possible. Write them all down then go through your list and figure out what fits into your theme, what fits into your budget, if it can be made yourself or not. If you are between a few, try them out and see which on looks the best!
Here are some great ideas to start with:

1. For a rustic down-to-earth wedding/event: Use an old piece of wood, or a new piece you beat up, and paint the number on the wood. Easy and cheap, yet still fits into the theme.
2. A winery wedding: use wine bottles and stick the number where the label is
3. Don't number the tables at all, but call each table something different based on your theme. For example, a wedding based around music had the tables labeled by different artists names and used their album covers.
4. Use Mason Jars filled with sand, seashells, other items related to your wedding/event and either have the number on the jar or sticking out of the jar.
5. Use a nice designed paper for the numbers and have them framed on the table to add a little more glam and elegance on a budget.
6. Use old newspaper or photos and paint the number on. Either back it with cardboard or put it in a frame.
7. Use Pictures of you as a couple holding up the number of the table and put it in frames.
8. Use  book and have the number on the front of the book.
9. Get some large rocks and either use paint pen or hot glue on the table number
10. Use Letters instead of numbers or words and use either wood letters that you can find at a craft store or metal letters...may take a little digging around
11. Use a mirror or glass and paint the number onto it
12. Use a small cake with the number on it... this is great as well because every table as their own personal cake to eat!
13. Find cheap cute plates and put the number on them... then just stand them up using a plate holder
14. Put the number on the flower vase
15. Use a chalk board

This is just me rambling on with ideas! So do the same thing! Think about items in your home or in the world that you could use! Be creative and have fun doing it
